4 Home Projects You Shouldn't Tackle on Your Own

There are a lot of home projects that are completely safe to accomplish on your own: painting, installing new faucets, cleaning dryer ducts, replacing cabinet hardware and power-washing your driveway. However, there are some projects that are best left to professionals. Here are four home repair jobs that should be completed by a professional.

1. Plumbing

Many homeowners feel comfortable replacing a faucet without the help of a plumber. Beyond that simple repair, many homeowners make the mistake of trying to fix pipes on their own. While it may seem easy to replace a pipe with a kit from your local home improvement store, it’s best to hire professional plumbing contractors San Jose CA. Plumbing is often more complicated than it looks and you don’t want to run the risk of causing a leak. Water leaks can lead to mold and costly repairs.

2. Electrical Work

You may feel confident enough to swap out a light fixture or install a ceiling fan to an existing wire. Anything that gets more complicated than these two scenarios definitely justifies hiring a licensed electrician. You shouldn’t run the risk of getting shocked or causing a fire by tackling more difficult jobs.

3. Demolition

Knocking down a wall with a sledgehammer definitely seems like a great way to get rid of some frustration. Before you attempt to knock down any walls, consult a contractor. Some walls may be load-bearing and you don’t want to cause sagging beams or a ceiling to cave in.

4. Sheetrock

Aside from sheetrock being heavy and awkward, hanging sheetrock isn’t necessarily dangerous. However, making sheetrock look good is a tedious job. Hiring a professional to hang your sheetrock is not that expensive and they have the tools and skills to make it look a lot better than you can.
There are many home projects that you can accomplish on your own. In contrast, there are some jobs that should be done by professionals in order to ensure safety and better results.

5 Ideas You Can Use Anytime To Add Style To Your Home

If you have ever looked around your house and thought it needed a makeover, take a breath. Before hiring someone to tear the area apart, try these five tricks for adding style to your home.

Paint

One of the easiest and most cost-efficient changes you can make to any room is with paint. Choose one of the professional painters Fairfax County VA, and select one or two of the thousands of available colors to shine up your walls. If you are bold, add a different paint to accent dividers or along the wall and door trims.

Plants

Plants add natural beauty to any room, but they can also improve your source of oxygen. The beautiful greenery can be tucked away in corners, added to window sills, or set upon a table as one of the focal points of the room. You can also use a vase full of flowers to add color to any area.

Lighting

The world of lighting changes frequently, and over the past decade, the styles have moved from shaded bulbs to industrial open lighting to geometric light sources. Whatever your style is, a new lamp or light strip can add a unique look and style to your home.

Window

If you are tired of seeing the same window covering year after year, change it up. You can choose from shades to sheers to curtains to drapes, or perhaps you prefer valances and swags. While you are switching the window treatments, why not get a new rod as well!

Rugs

One of the most dramatic ways to change the look and feel of a room is with a new area rug. Pick a geometric design for a fun flare, a traditional Oriental rug for a time-honored look, or select a wild design full or bright colors as a focal point to the room.

You don’t have to remodel your home to enjoy a new look. Try these five ideas to add a new style to any room in your house – and save some money.

Using Window Treatments as a Natural Alarm Clock

For as long as the world spins round scientists will always be looking for that creation that bolsters the quality of our sleep. Like it or not, we'll never be satisfied with the amount of pillow-time we get, and we'll always be looking for methods to try and wake up bright and fresh, rather than dull and groggy.

Something that the scientists have worked out is that natural light plays a bit part in the way in which we come around in a morning. It's for this very reason that we have seen all types of alarm clock inventions hit the shelves, with some even aiming to disperse light around your bedroom in a bid to try and acclimatize your body to the morning.

We're not going to go quite as far as that today. Instead, as you've probably gathered with the headline, we're going to delve into window treatments and the part they can play in helping you achieve a good night's sleep.

We've all heard of the wonders of blackout blinds when it comes to sleep quality and if you really want to maximize the amount of shut-eye that you receive, these are products that will most certainly work very well for you.

However, it’s not all about keeping your room pitch-dark. Admittedly, it will promote a much more fruitful nights’ sleep, but this isn’t the problem for some people. Instead, it’s the morning routine and even if you’ve surpassed the so-called magic eight hours, pulling yourself up out of bed is still a mission in itself.

This is where something like the motorized blind could enter the picture. Initially these were systems that were targeted at inaccessible windows, where it just wasn’t possible to manipulate the covering. Now, the landscape has changed. Using the programmable timer that most manufacturers attach to motorized systems, it’s possible to dictate exactly what time the blind opens. As such, if you tell it to start to let the sun through your windows an hour or so before you wake up, you will slowly allow your body to become used to the morning sun and wake up naturally.

Of course, it’s not a magic solution and is by no means going to make getting out of bed the easiest chore of the day. Nevertheless, it’s something that can make a difference to your sleep routine and perhaps reduce the number of occasions you press the dreaded snooze button.

There are plenty of other sleep-related tips that link to blinds as well. If you happen to sleep in a room which just catches too much sun during the day, tossing and turning will become a routine in itself as you bid to beat the heat and get to sleep. In these instances, something like a solar shade would work absolute wonders and allow you to block out those powerful UV rays that make your bedroom an oven.

In short, blinds allow you to optimize your sleeping habits to your heart’s desire. Again, it’s not a magic formula, but it can make that morning slog so much easier.  For more ideas for a better sleep experience, try to check out this guide from Counting Sheep Research.

3 Ways to Remove Stains from Wood Furniture

Few things are more frustrating than spilling something on your wood furniture and having to deal with the resulting stain. Simply wiping the wood down with conventional cleaners will almost never do the trick, and using too much water can actually make the situation worse.

Furthermore, improper scrubbing or wiping the wood with the wrong materials can cause further damage, which may be irreparable if the wood is degraded or the stains reach far enough below the polish. Fortunately, if you haven't yet ruined the stained spot with a failed cleaning attempt, it is relatively easy to remove both light water stains and dark iron stains from wood furniture using the following techniques:

Removing Light-Colored Water Stains

First, if you have white stains on your wood furniture, try rubbing some mineral oil onto the spot using a soft cloth. Let the oil sit on the spot overnight, and if it appears to be working the next morning then repeat with another rubbing.

If the stain has been absorbed into the wood's finish but has not yet made its way into the wax layer, and mineral oil isn't getting the job done, then rubbing the areas with mineral spirits on a soft cloth may work. Be sure to wear gloves while doing this in an area with good ventilation. If the mineral spirits get rid of the stain but leave the spot looking duller than the rest of the wood, then cover the furniture’s surface entirely with mineral spirits and then apply a coat of good quality polish formulated for wood furniture.

If mineral spirits aren't effective, try rubbing the spot with a mixture of baking soda and toothpaste. Rub with the grain until the discoloration is diminished and then clean the spot with an oil soap. Sometimes it can take a couple applications of this mixture before the stain will start to come out. Once the stain is gone, use furniture wax to coat the wood.

Use Sandpaper to Remove Dark Stains

Sometimes you can get rid of dark stains by simply removing the stain’s finish with some sandpaper. Rub the spot with #100-grit sandpaper moving back and forth along the wood’s grain. Once you're done with the initial step of removing the finish, the edges of the spot can be feathered with #150-grit sandpaper.
Next the stain itself should be sanded with the sandpaper (#150-grit) and here the edges can be feathered with fine steel wool. Once the stain has been sanded out, use a tack cloth to eliminate the dust from sanding, and then put on varnish, just a couple thin coats, that will blend the sanded spot to the original finish. The edges of the newly varnished area should be feathered to smooth out the difference between the new and old varnish. Finally, polish the wood with a high quality product.

Removing Dark Brown or Black Iron Stains With Bleach

Oxalic Acid Wood BleachShould the stain be too far down to reach with aggressive sandpapering, you might need to resort to using oxalic acid wood bleach to penetrate deeper into the wood and remove the stain. Put on the bleach over the stained spot using a brush and wearing rubber gloves.

Next comes the waiting game. Let the bleach sit on the stain for a time, a few hours is recommended. The spot will slowly begin to fade to the original color. Check on the stain periodically, and once the color of the wood has been restored to its original state, wipe the area clean with a wet sponge to prevent excessive bleaching and fading.

After cleaning the bleach off you'll need to counteract the chemicals on the area by applying vinegar. After allowing the wood to dry, the wood can be stained if needed. Finally, apply a few light coats of varnish to the spot, smooth the edges of the varnish with #1000-grit sandpaper, and wax the entire surface with a wood polish.

The Programmable Timer: It's Not Just a Fancy, Unnecessary Function for Blinds

Anyone who has studied the blinds industry over the last few years is probably fully aware of the technological developments. In other words, forget Nest and all of the other energy devices that have hit the market over recent years - the window blinds industry is inundated with inventions that can beat such products hands down.
There was once a time when motorized blinds were associated with an epic rolling of the eyebrows. After all, what person in their right mind wants to control their window treatment using a remote control or other device? The answer, at least several years ago, was either a show-off or someone with more money than sense.

However, fast-forward to the modern day and the landscape has changed. If you have the money to fund the initial installation cost, motorized blinds could be one of the best investments in technology you make. As you may have gathered from the title, we're going to specifically concentrate on the programmable timers that most of them are accompanied by nowadays.

This is arguably the biggest development in the blinds industry. While solar shades, insulated shades and all of the other different mechanisms may have taken the industry by storm and probably delivered the most sales, the motorized product with the programmable timer is the one that can make the biggest difference.
Timer switch on wall next to porch light

It doesn't matter which type of blind arms your home; as long as it’s motorized the possibilities are endless. The ability to manipulate your blinds through different portions of the day should never be underestimated, firstly from an energy efficiency perspective. While the solar solutions and other mechanisms can work wonders in this regard, even if you have just a basic blackout product it can perform even better alongside a programmable timer. It can allow optimum amounts of sunlight in through the course of the day when the home is unoccupied and ultimately, lower the reliance on synthetic heating methods.

This technology also shouldn't be forgotten from a security point of view. Most of us have firmly bought into the idea of leaving the lights on as we depart for work for the day, particular during winter, in a bid to deter would-be thieves when darkness falls. Suffice to say, if it’s obvious that the blinds have been manipulated and moved through the day, it’s a sure-fire indication to potential intruders that your home is occupied. In other words, you’re sending them away.

Already, we’re starting to see that the programmable timer is hugely powerful. Some people will still get these blinds installed for show, while others might have them for more practical reasons such as the inability to reach certain windows. However, the real power rests in the programmable timer and if you are one of those people who wants to “tech-up” their house in whatever way possible, this nifty feature could be the ideal way to achieve the above whilst satisfying several every day needs in the process.

Glass for Gas Fireplace Specifications and Details

When flat glass is created, the molten silica mixture is slowly cooled in conditions that have been carefully controlled. This procedure means that any undesirable stresses have been removed from the glass itself. Cooling happens in a “lehr”, which is also known as an annealing device. Glass that has gone through this process is known as ordinary glass.

However, there is also something called “heat treated glass”, which is the type of glass for gas fireplace. This has been heated to the point of melting, after which it is cooled very rapidly. This type of heating and cooling induce stress on the glass, making it much stronger. It also allows the glass to endure heat and become more resistant overall. Heat tempered glass can be either heat strengthened or fully tempered. Fully tempered glass has to have at least 10,000 psi of surface compression, or 9,700 psi of edge compression at least. Heat strength glass has to have between 3,500 and 10,000 psi of surface compression, or between 5,500 and 9,700 psi edge compression. Anything below that is classed as ordinary glass. Furthermore, heat tempered glass has a number of specific fracture characteristics.

The Principle of Heat Treatment
When the edge or surface of glass is placed under tension, it will fracture. Any edge fissures or inherent surface will then propagate, becoming a visible crack or even a full break. The heat treating process utilized in tempered glass means that there already is a surface or edge compression in its initial condition. This is done by heating the glass firstly, and then cooling it very rapidly. The center of the glass, at the time, is then still hot compared to the actual surface of the glass. The center will then start to cool, compression the edges and surface. As a result, any type of impact, be that heat, wind pressure or even a missile impact, must then overcome this compression before it can fracture the glass itself.

The Process of Manufacturing Glass for Gas Fireplace

The most important procedure of heat treating glass is found in applying a very rapid air quench, which must happen as soon as the hot glass (it must be around 1200 degrees Fahrenheit at least) is removed from the furnace. It is the sustained and immediate application of the air quench that provides the glass with the necessary temper. The direction of the air against the hot glass should be mixed in nature, including reciprocation of blast nozzles that rotated and that are fixed. This means that the entire surface, on both sides, has had the heat extracted in a uniform manner. If it is uneven, the glass surface will heat back up again, as the center is still hot. The quenched condition of the glass is classed as stable when the surface temperature is reduced to around 500 degrees Fahrenheit. All of this can be achieved either through a vertical position, or through a horizontal position. There is no difference in strength between these two methods.

The Importance of Home Decorating

I do believe that there is no such person who cannot fully appreciate the importance of home decoration not unless they do not own the house and they are not entitled to redecorate the existing furnishings. :) For me, the ability to decorate and re-arrange one’s furniture’s should not be taken for granted because it sets one’s mind at ease and of course it will make you comfortable in your own space. Besides the fact that decorating our interior living space is probably the most popular past-time activity among others.

Now that we are planning to have our so called “home” so soon, then it would be great to plan ahead on what would be the theme of our house. For me I’ll go for the minimalist appeal and I guess the Horchow collection could offer me such. As the rules they lived: …”Rearranging furniture is therapeutic while rearranging wall décor is revelatory and if it makes you smile, it’s your style!”.

The Magic Ooze Tube

I have been in this national agency for almost six years and I can say that I have learned many so many things from them. I mean I’m not an agriculturist but I know a bit of what’s happening on the field of agriculture. They have been trying to implement projects in helping the farmers on how to increase their commodities and their income at the same time. Our agency also provides construction of irrigations, deep-well, reservoirs and etc for the farmers.

Speaking of irrigation, I found it so interesting as I was surfing the net about the
vegetable and tree Ooze Tube. I was amazed as I saw how it looks like and how does the farmer can benefits from it.

It’s just so simple…just simply set up the tube with irrigation at the base o f each plant. Waters up to two weeks the perfect amount of moisture for healthy optimal growth. Add water soluble fertilizer to increase yield. Now you can go away for the week-end and not worry about watering your vegetables and the newly planted trees as well.

Hope I can spread this out to my technical office mates so that they can also pass it on to the farmers.
