How To Keep Yourself Unattractive to Insects?

Summertime is the optimal time to enjoy the outdoors. But, your best plans can be spoiled by a little pesky threat. Insects can spoil your good times without mosquito pond treatment and other safeguards against insect bites from mosquitoes, ticks and other creatures.

Why Mosquitoes are Attracted to Human Skin

According to experts, the human skin carries 400 compounds that mosquitoes find attractive. They respond to things such as:
  • Sweat
  • High body temperatures
  • Perfumes
  • Pregnant women

Mosquitoes are drawn to carbon dioxide. Typically, women who are pregnant exhale more of this gas and also have more blood circulating through their bodies. While pregnant women may draw more attention, the genetics of some people's bodies make them natural repellents to mosquitoes.

Health Dangers of Bug Bites
You are familiar with redness, swelling and annoying itchy skin after getting bit by a mosquito. However, some insects may also carry West Nile and other dangerous viruses that get passed on to the bitten person.

Most people who become infected with the West Nile virus do not have any symptoms. Some may experience minor signs of the virus. Others who get infected may develop life-threatening illnesses such as inflammation of the brain.

Fight the Bite
There are different ways to keep mosquitoes at bay so you can enjoy the summer without getting sick. You can find good bug repellant products in stores, but some remedies might be as close as your refrigerator.

For example, you can rub your skin with a lemon or orange peel before going outdoors. Either one can help repel biting insects. Store-bought insect repellent works just as well. Products with natural plant-like chemicals are considered best and last for long periods of time.

Another way to may your skin less attractive to insects is to place a small amount of anise oil when you wash your clothes. This oil mixes with detergent and puts the oil on your clothes. Adding a few drops of anise oil to bug repellent may also help.

Try wearing light colored clothing and cover your arms and legs when going into a wooded area. Outdoor fans at a backyard cookout may keep insects away and keep you happy.
